Is Portugal Worth Visiting?

Introduction

You’ve seen the aesthetic and stunning photos, you’ve heard all the great travel stories, you’ve scrolled through endless travel guides, but you’re still asking yourself—Is Portugal worth visiting? Is it really what it seems? Well, I will share my experience in Portugal and what I learned from my trip, to help you decide if you should hit the green light and book that adventure!

Different Facets of Portugal

When deciding why you should visit Portugal and if it will be worth the trip, here are the key things that you should consider.

Portugal’s Location

Portugal has a stunning coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. This means breathtaking ocean views, as well as endless opportunities for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. The country’s geographic position also has a mild climate year-round, making it an attractive destination for travelers seeking pleasant weather. Additionally, Portugal’s location provides easy access to other European countries, making it a convenient stop on a broader European itinerary.

Proximity to Other Countries

Portugal is conveniently located near other European countries, with Spain being the closest due to their shared border. On my trip, I was in Madrid prior, so I was able to easily take an 8 hour bus ride to Lisbon. I booked a one way ticket, which was about $15 USD. Other countries that are relatively close to Portugal that would be a great addition to your European travel itinerary include France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. With Europe’s efficient travel network, visiting Portugal means you can easily explore diverse cultures and attractions just a short journey away.

Diverse Landscapes

When it comes to exploring the country, Portugal has diverse landscapes. From the rugged cliffs of the Algarve to the historic hills of Lisbon, it is a stunning destination. Each region has its own unique natural beauty and charm, making Portugal a destination for different types of travelers. As someone who loves being at the beach, I enjoyed spending a lovely sunny day at a beautiful beach in Faro, where the sands and clear waters created the perfect setting for relaxation. On the other hand, I also appreciated the small town scenery in Cascais, as well as the cultural atmosphere and historic architecture in Lisbon

Culture

Portuguese culture is a vibrant mix of influences from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Fado music, colorful festivals, and a love for soccer are just a few aspects of their rich culture. The country’s history is celebrated in everything from their food to their art. Portugal’s warm hospitality is also a key part of its culture, with locals often going out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Whether you’re strolling through a busy market or enjoying a traditional meal, you’ll find that Portugal’s cultural heritage is quite enjoyable.

Culinary Experience

For the food lovers, Portuguese cuisine is an enjoyable fusion of flavors, with seafood taking center stage. You can’t forget to try the world-famous custard tarts, Pastéis de Nata. It was so good that I ended up filling my mini tote with a significant amount of it before heading back to Madrid.

What You Should Know Before You Go

Language

Portuguese is the official language, but many locals in tourist areas speak English. Learning a few basic Portuguese phrases can go a long way in enhancing your experience.

Best Time To Visit

Portugal’s weather is pleasant year-round, but the best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the crowds are less, and the temperatures are comfortable. I went at the end of May and I got to enjoy the lovely summer weather, while avoiding large crowds and long lines at popular sites.

Transportation

Portugal has an efficient and affordable transportation system, including trains, buses, and trams. Consider purchasing a Lisboa Card for unlimited public transportation in Lisbon. In Faro, I only had 2 stops, therefore I used an uber to get around. Cascais is a small town that is easily walkable, and so I walked everywhere which allowed me to see a lot of the city. However, there are also taxis and Ubers available if that is your preference.

Safety

Portugal is generally a safe destination for tourists. However, exercise standard precautions like safeguarding your belongings and being aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. During my visit, I never felt unsafe, though it’s worth noting that I was traveling with a group of three.

Currency and Money Matters

Portugal uses the Euro (€). ATMs are widely available, and credit cards are accepted in most places. Be sure to notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with using your card.

Packing Tips

Here are some tips to help you make sure that you are well prepared for your trip!

  • Footwear: One crucial thing to consider when packing for your Portugal trip is ensuring you have suitable footwear. When people say the streets of Lisbon are elevated, they are not exaggerating! Underestimating the steepness of the hills of every narrow cobblestone street can significantly ruin your day. This is why comfortable shoes are a must to ensure an enjoyable and pain-free day in Lisbon.
  • Beach Essentials: If you’re visiting coastal destinations like the Algarve, be sure to pack your swimsuit and beachwear. Also, you’ll need sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sunny days, especially if you plan to spend time at the beach.
  • Travel Adapters: Portugal uses European-style Type C and Type F plugs, so bring the appropriate adapters for your electronic devices.

So, Is Portugal Worth Visiting? My Final Thoughts

Portugal proved to be an unforgettable destination, where its diverse culture allowed me to experience its beauty. The beautiful landscapes of the Algarve, the historic streets of Lisbon and the coastal beauty of Cascais all provided incredible memories. Despite being there for only three days, I genuinely felt like I was able to do and see so much. So I can only imagine that a longer trip would have even more to offer.

Portugal was certainly worth visiting in my opinion, because it offered a variety of experiences, making the trip well-rounded and fulfilling.

But what about you – what do you think? Now that you have a glimpse of what Portugal has to offer, is it a destination worthwhile?
